After fourteen years in Fort Myers, I'm pleased to announce that I'm moving to Orlando and joining the team at Fox 35. WOFL is based in Lake Mary, a little north of the city. I wanted to move to one of Florida's larger metros and grow my career as a director, and with God's help it looks like I found a good place to do that.
I've enjoyed my time in Southwest Florida, and working at Waterman Broadcasting has truly been a blessing. As a TV market, I feel that Fort Myers has always punched well above its weight. I've made great newscasts with a lot of great people, many of whom have moved onto larger markets themselves. In spite of its rapidly growing population, though, Southwest Florida remains a retiree-focused place that doesn't quite know what to call itself (Fort Myers? Naples? Cape Coral? I once heard us branded the "Marco Island" area, LOL). While I was never tempted to return to New York, it was always my goal to end up in some larger metro, namely Tampa or Orlando. This year I decided to go for it.
This market hop takes me from DMA 55 up to DMA 18, with a million more TV households in Central Florida than Southwest Florida, and all the tourists at Disnep World to boot. I'm not a big amusement park guy, but I am a road geek and a radio nerd. Guess what Orlando has plenty more of? I look forward to exploring my new city and meeting new people. The local chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers is based there. So is MegaCon, ha ha.
I'll be posting an updated Orlando bandscan to the YouTube channel, of course. Work on This Falling Eden will be on hold for another month, but I expect to resume editing that masterpiece as soon as my stuff is moved into a new place.
A fond farewell to Fort Myers, the second largest metro in the United States not served by any local expressways. (Beaten only by West Palm.) You'll get 'em built someday. In the meantime, Orlando has five. ;)
