For eleven years my flagship software product, an alarm clock called Wake Up! Pro, has been available for download on egrabow.com. One of the July 28 changes, however, was its removal. The operating systems it was designed for, Windows 98 and XP, are too old and it wasn't getting downloaded as much. Since I stopped using it personally a long time ago and other projects have taken up my time I never had much interest in updating it. So finally my once-cherished product has reached "end of life." Cue my wave of nostalgia.
The last release was version 2.5 in 2007
. Two other programs, KeyPrint and BreadMeter, had releases but never got any traction. At the time I'd hoped to learn C and start writing Linux versions and so on, but I never managed to get as excited about Linux as I'd wanted to (that's a rant for another day). Wake Up! Pro nevertheless remained quite popular, being downloaded 56,000 times from 2004 to 2015. Writing Visual Basic was ultimately replaced by writing novels, "coding a story" as I liked to think about it, code that will run on many many platforms for many many years. As a product, Caffeine
will not reach "end of life" until after I do.
So to celebrate eleven years of Wake Up! Pro, and before I get rid of my last XP machine running it, I've recorded an "Easter Egg" (hidden feature) I'd put in the program. I doubt anyone ever found it by accident, but then easter eggs are supposed to be hard to find. Don't even try looking for one on this site! *wink*
Source code is still available to anyone who wishes to continue developing it. Please contact me
if interested. I would love to see someone carry the torch forward.
