Offramps Page At Last!
It's been 18 months since this website's last redesign. Some pages took longer than others to adapt to the new light-background-dark-text scheme, and my interactive logbook was built from scratch in that time. Only my Offramps Page - the highway-themed page featuring links to my favorite websites - remains on version 28, and it's had that distinction for a pretty long time now. I knew it wouldn't be an easy page to redesign, but I'm finally getting around to it. Soon I'll be rid of the old Exi...
Substitute Sangean Radio
When I got my Sangean ATS-909X there were some concerns about quality control: the earliest shipments of the black models were having problems and getting sent back. By the time I bought mine the 909X had been out a couple of years, with the issues presumably sorted out, and it looked like I got a good one; but after two and a half years my 909X stopped turning on for no apparent reason. I tried all the stuff you're supposed to try. Sending it across the country for repairs would be a hassle (an...
Life Without Fast Food
The short hair trick I posted about last year worked better than expected. Now my hair is back to normal and fast-food is permitted again on certain occasions, but I went several weeks with zero trips to a McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc, for the first time in my adult life. It was far easier than I anticipated and more effective on the scale - since I was intentionally buying more "appealing" stuff at the supermarket to forestall temptation. This did result in a bump to my sodium intake, h...
Audio/Video Component Archive
I never walk away from it for long, do I? :D
For those new to egrabow.com, my Audio/Video Component Archive (AVCA) used to be a big part of the site. The AVCA was my first online "resource" at a time when I was still deciding what direction to take egrabow.com in. Basically it's a catalog of old electronics, VCRs or CD players from whatever brands and years, meant to highlight how they evolved over time. ("Catalog" doesn't mean I was selling anything, but I was certainl...
Finally, Some "Real" DX
Well it's not much, but it's the first "real" DX I've had in this condo. I was seriously starting to worry. :\

Yaphank Ceremony 2017
With this year's drive to Tampa in the bag my '03 Cavalier has seen its last planned road trip. The nice off-lease car from ten years ago has been beaten on by the Florida sun and begun to develop mechanical problems. My first two cars could get away with that, but I'd like to trade this one in while I still remember it being nice. ;)
Cue my traditional "Yaphank Ceremony," named for the first place I ever drove just because I'd never been there before, a celebration of the fr...
Second Wind for the Second Novel
After more than three years on the backburner, the outlines, notes, and typescript for my second novel are seeing the light of day again. I've used some vacation days to revise the outline, which I'm very happy with, and I reenter the writing phase this week. The working title had been The Day The Rain Came Back, but now I have changed it to This Falling Eden. The new title seems more literary, and (like Caffeine) is a clever reflection of the novel's contents. (This is the project's third title...
Shorter YouTube Videos
Now that I've successfully restarted the writing process for This Falling Eden and settled into a routine that allows me to work on it several times a week, I decided I can resume working on YouTube videos in August. The first in line are my DX clips from this past tropo season, moving onto the (in progress) e-skip season, and finally back to bandscans. However there will not be as much time per week as before, so there will be some workflow changes reflected on my channel.
I started posting...
The Return of Power Everything
Ten years ago I traded an old fully featured car for a much newer but barely featured car. Now that it's 2017 can I have both low miles and high features? Looks like the answer is yes.
This week I traded in the Chevy Cavalier for a Honda Accord. After ten years of crank windows and no cruise control it now feels like I'm back in the Supra, LOL. I'll be doing my commuting, road trips, bandscans, and donuts in the parking lot in relative luxury now. The Yaphank Ceremony will be completed on...
Live from the Eye of the Storm
Me in the newsroom as the eye of Hurricane Irma passed over us.
Hurricanes are a part of life along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, with Florida being the bullseye right inbetween them. Hurricane Irma apprached as a friend and I were returning from DragonCon in Atlanta (my first visit there in five years ), so I went from a vacation directly into 12-hour work days - right through the weekend - with me sleeping in the building because I really couldn't leave. The huge storm finally made la...
I'm on Twitter!
It was only a matter of time I suppose. :/
I spent the beginning of this month at DragonCon, and among the various topics covered in the writing panels was social media. I've had Facebook and YouTube for a while now, though (with the exception of a short-lived group I created to promote my first novel) neither of these platforms has been geared toward writing. In fact the YouTube channel has gone so far into DXing territory I've stopped posting videos about anything else. I wonder what I'll ...
Big Pile of Model Number$
Since the Audio/Video Component Archive relaunched this year I've been adding and revising HiFi listings at a reasonably good pace, considering the time I can spend on it. I've also been making a steady stream of improvements to its operating code. And this week I got my first check for eBay ad revenue: a far cry from "quit your job" money, but enough to give me hope for future supplimental income.
Before I can really promote the AVCA I need to do something about those enormous c...
